Click the link and please share!
Hey everyone, I am excited to announce that I am going to record a new full length album called One Machine At A Time. My last Tigers and Monkeys' release came out in 2018 and my last and first solo release came out in 2011 so it's about time! I'm looking forward to recording in the city in which I recorded my first album and created an amazing network of talented musician friends, Atlanta, GA! In celebration of the launch of my Indiegogo Campaign, and the first day of summer, I am sharing a photo of my mom with me on her lap holding my first guitar! Yeah - I know, lucky you! Please make sure you watch the short video in that link. I think it explains it all. I am grateful for your support. I hope summer brings you good times! xoxo Shonali
Shonali Bhowmiktag:shonalibhowmik.com,2005:Post/71924842023-04-18T12:36:02-04:002024-01-12T00:57:06-05:00New Single and New Video - Bomb Shelter
It's been a minute since I've released new music but here it is along with a brand new AI video - the first of it's kind!

During the pandemic the messiness of the world including the loss of my father turned my head into mush. When I pushed myself to move on with it, I imagined I’d joined the Muppets and was just "tagging along and feeling dumb” allowing something light and bright to carrying me forward. This became one of my favorite ways to cope. Experimenting with minimal equipment, and self recording at home with the help of my talented bandmate Jason Lam, I created a breezy pop song (first time with synth horns) which I hope becomes a plush soundscape for the summer days ahead complete with psychoacoustic noise which Jason says is supposed to work subliminally in your mind to make you feel extra good.

This video is cray and I look insane! I love it! It fits with my song in the most perfectly imperfect way.I reached out to my crazily talented tech wizard friend and Tigers and Monkeys’ bandmate Jason Lam a few weeks ago asking whether he could make an AI music video for my new single Bomb Shelter. I asked him whether there was a way to incorporate some of my surreal dream sequences into a video using AI video software. He said “maybe” which I assumed meant yes. I sent him a list of my dreams and he made my dreams literally come to AI life. This video is fantastically more fun, more surreal and more disturbing than my dreams are. I’m so grateful to Jason for creating it. Look - this AI video stuff is going to get better and better but for now this is what I call incredible.

Shonali Bhowmiktag:shonalibhowmik.com,2005:Post/68898392022-02-05T21:16:00-05:002024-01-12T00:58:07-05:00You Forgot
A few weeks ago, Jan. 15, 2022 the cold weather inspired me. I wrote, recorded this rough track called “You Forgot” on my GarageBand. Video is a slate video from an audition. Slate videos are so painful. #SaveTheEarth

Lyrics:

You forgot the wind whispers when she’s lost. All the leaves know her plans. The cold falls through her hands. She survived. Watch the world spin on its broken side. Can’t believe we’re still here. Stragglers laugh and then disappear. You forgot we are creatures who love the dark. Hiding trails of lonely hearts. Fires play when we depart.

This past year we have endured an insurmountable amount of loss. Almost everyone we know has either lost a loved one or someone close to us has. And on top of the loss of our loved ones comes the loneliness felt from this pandemic isolation. Zoom and Facetime calls are in no way a real substitute for being able to mourn and/or celebrate the lives of our loved ones with each other. We all are doing our best at making every moment count, striving to stay strong for our loved ones & to preserve our own sanity. This has been no small feat for each one of us.

One of the losses I suffered in recent months, is the passing of my friend musician, songwriter, life enthusiast Sam Jayne. There was no one like him. He's loved by so many people and there is a community of people that are desperate to get together to celebrate his life. I wrote a tribute for him that I would like to share with you. Perhaps it resonates with you regarding a life led by a person who only cared about his community and the arts. I wrote it on the day after I learned of his passing, December 16, 2020. It is on his tribute page SamJayneForever which includes many statements, pics, videos & music shared by his many loved ones. It starts like this but please click the link to read on...

Hi friends,

Some of you may or not know that my friend Sam Jayne just passed away, others of you are also his dear mutual friends and are feeling the gut wrenching pain of his loss in our lives. I couldn't help but write this today and share with you. If you for some reason don't feel like reading, at the least, I hope you will listen to his wonderful song in celebration of his life. #samjayne #samjayneforever #loveaslaughter

Michelle Obama has made it clear that everyone should be prepared: "We have got to grab our comfortable shoes, put on our masks, pack a brown bag dinner and maybe breakfast too because we’ve got to be willing to stand in line all night if we have to.” I had a friend in Charleston, SC - specifically text me yesterday "You gotta provide 'some kind of entertainment' for those in line" and that's all it took... here we are! How many of you are getting requests from Charleston, SC like that?! Exactly!

We have all been dealing with the devastation caused to our due to the coronavirus pandemic. We have all been doing our best coping with our new way of life. It is unlike anything we have every experienced before. I personally have found myself feeling unfocused, anxious and unable to create music or art which I also have decided is okay. I appreciate the small things because the big picture is overwhelming. I found a moment of focus and calm during this pandemic in which I wrote, recorded and edited a video for a new song which is called I'll Be Your Therapy. I will be releasing this song on November 13, 2020 for the world to hear. I used the process of writing this song as a reminder to myself it is good to check out of the news cycle & social media once in awhile. #selfcare. My goal was not for perfection, to not overthink and to use videos from my life which bring my happiness. Can't wait to share it with you.

Lots of people lost their lives and many families lost their homes. My husband Jasper and I in fact had just flown back from Nashville to NYC the night of the tornado. I feel lucky that my family and immediate circle of friends are okay. But not everyone is okay. My mom attempted to drive downtown this past week and she could not get through the roadblocks set up due to all the debris. My mom teared up when telling me how she was so saddened by the destruction and the devastation in our city. She saw folks standing outside of their eviscerated homes and businesses. I am confident that the city will rebuild itself and Nashvillians will rally behind those who have lost their belongings and homes. But also I feel the need to reach out to my community of those who may want to help Nashville. Here is a link to a nonprofit volunteer group called Hands On Nashville. The site has a number of ways you can help the people of Nashville and the Nashville Tornado Relief Program via donations or volunteering.

Here's an account of how the community is coming together in Nashville by Margaret Renkly in the NYT - The tornadoes that tore through Middle Tennessee felt like the apocalypse. But people here had other plans. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/08/opinion/nashville-tornado.html

Lastly here is a brand new video by Tigers and Monkeys shot on iPhones in Nashville (by another native Nashvillian Kim Murrey & myself) and in our rehearsal space in Brooklyn (by Jasper Patch.) The song is called Tiger On A Leash and the video is dedicated to my friends in Nashville and the city itself which means so much to me and has given me so much during my lifetime.

There is so much we are all contending with these days. It's rough out there! The main thing that gets me through the day to day is my family, friends, community and chocolate. Thank you for being there.

Love to you all!

We celebrate inspiring humans and conversation in an intimate space, the Red Room Speakeasy upstairs of the KGB Bar in the East Village. My co-host Christian Felix & I felt like our brand of conversation was virtually invisible outside of when we were on the phone together - the intersection of art, comedy, music, race, gender, existence, friendship, sexual orientation, politics and the minutiae. Our show has existed for 7 years and we still feel like outsiders in a good way. Our next show is 9/24 at 8pm w guest co-host Duane Harriott (Negroclash, WRVU) Comedian Rob Cantrell, Writer Tamara Best & Musician Chris Opperman. We discuss toxic masculinity, respect for the stand-up Gods, job security and being on late night tv on Conan twice. Christian asks about Nore’s use of the N word. One of those places for me is the creative world. I have managed to surround myself with so many generous, talented, creative, funny people and I never take that for granted. They make me feel better about myself and the world when I am with them. Here is a window into that world - it's the Vimeo channel for a web series I started a few years back. I look at this and think "Girl You are Crazy!" but not only with regard to the content, but with respect to the ability to get so many great people to contribute their time and effort to working with me. So here's the link and I hope you enjoy the craziness.

Ep. 5: Shayla finds the life of a celebrity is too much for her and develops a terrible British accent and becomes a hikikomori, a recluse. Her boyfriend Wade is supportive and her neighbor Annette are reassuring but is that enough to draw a crazy woman out of her bedroom? It takes her best friend Katie to ignite Shayla's will to to live. The cast includes Shonali Bhowmik, Katina Corrao, Greg Barris, Eleanore Pienta and Jason Lam. Stay tuned for Ep. 6 - The Fundraiser.
New York City’s Tigers & Monkeys is back with their third full-length album Saturday Destroyer, a project that tackles the norms of society and provides a sense of encouragement and empowerment to fight back. Fusing rock, southern influence, and a hint of blues, Saturday Destroyer creates a sound that is unlike any other. Front woman, Shonali Bhowmik, describes the songs as pages taken from her life in a big city which is all things at once: aggressive, careless, staggering, hypocritical and a tease.

Bhowmik creates songs by using her personal background as a Nashville native and combining it with her New York City experience. Her lyrics are inspiring and filled with influence. The band includes Jason Lam (bass, vocals), Joachim Kearns (guitar), Russ Dungan (guitar, surfer), Antonia Santangelo (percussion, dancing), Anthony Cangelosi (drums) with honorary members Jody Bilinski (drums) and Jeff Sheinkopf (keyboards, drums).Tigers and Monkeys have joined stages with renowned bands like Sleater Kinney, Matt and Kim, Ted Leo and The Pharmacists, The Shins, Love As Laughter and Heartless Bastards. Their music videos have been directed by Fred Armisen (SNL, Portlandia), Mike Luciano (HBO’s Animals) and Joe Mischo. Saturday Destroyer (Little Lamb Recordings) was recorded at Threshold Studios in Manhattan and produced by the legendary Kenny “The Soundman” Lienhardt of the Bowery Ballroom is available now.

Excited about 2016, well slow down now - 2015 is not over yet and there's still time to screw things up OR get things right! That's right! We've still got Christmas (no gifts please) and then there's December 29th at HiFi in NYC. To top off my wonderful year ( I got married, debuted a play, a web series AND stopped biting my fingernails) my We Don't Even Know co-host Christian and I will be joined by special guest and long time friend comedian/actor David Cross along with my girl crush Dolly Wells of HBO's Doll and Em for a special edition of We Don't Even Know. Come join us! It's intimate! It's free! It's fun and it's educational. When does that happen? All those things at one time! Duhh....never! See you on the 29th.
Shonali Bhowmiktag:shonalibhowmik.com,2005:Post/39082392015-10-27T16:34:14-04:002022-02-05T04:23:37-05:00littlelambrecordings:

Sorry about that. I'm good. Had the wedding of a lifetime in New Orleans, LA week before last and am now gearing up to release a comedy album by the amazing Katina Corrao (who also stars in Shayla Hates Celebrities with me and starred in my play Bed Bugs and Hot Pockets) on my label Little Lamb Recordings. As you can see, I am a huge fan of Katina's. She is a superstar! A great talent and a fantastic lady. I am lucky to know her and be her friend. Please ask her about the story when I was telling her to get an MRI but stopped in the middle of the story to change the subject. Or ask her why she always moves my hand off of her shoulder or knee when I am slightly touching her in a friendly way to get her attention. I am certain this is only funny to Katina and I, am I right? So alas, I am going to be playing my guitar with my entire band in a few days! Tigers and Monkeys is playing a rock show next week, Friday, October 30th at 9pm, Hank's Saloon in Brooklyn.. All these things are what make my world go round and round! The other things are chocolate, moisturizer, fuzzy slippers, friends and family. Love them and need them all. Join us at Katina's album release party at HiFi in the EV on October 27 at 7pm w lots of amazing comedians, oven mitts and Katina's awesome album. Oooh also thanks for all your support on Bed Bugs and Hot Pockets! We won the Audience Award at the DUTF Festival 2015 and we were also selected to perform at the SAIPAF 2015 (South Asian Performing Arts Festival) at the Access Theater. It's April! I am in the final days of preparation for the showcase of my short play Bed Bugs and Hot Pockets on May 14th which was selected to be in the 2015 Downtown Urban Theater Festival. I am honored, completely overwhelmed, invigorated, exhausted, embarrassed and proud of my work. It's never easy to enter a situation in which you've never been (playwright/director)- but in this case that's exactly why I am excited to be here. Sure there is so much to consider; the technical aspects like lighting, sound cues, projection, props and there's the more substantive part which is working with actors, retooling the script, and learning from the people with whom I am working. I am fortunate to be surrounded by super talented friends who have helped turn my nervousness into both an adventure and a party! Yeah. Not the "put your hands up in the air raise the roof" type o' party (do you go to those?), but the family vacation type of party where you don't go too crazy and you are mindful of your chores. I would say we are responsible partiers.

My awesome friend Amy Slonaker has been helping me as a producer for the play which means we regularly discuss new ways to set up the stage, new places to rent props, and new techniques for using a glue gun. I have cast a fantastic group of human beings to be in this play and I am dumbfounded by how good they all are. The play stars Katina Corrao and Christian Felix, with Jason Lam, Jordan Clifford, Anne Lanier, Sean Eden, Eric Slovin and myself. That alone is enough reason for you to join us. You should purchase tickets now at www.here.org and www.dutfnyc.com because honestly, I believe the show will be sold out. Not bragging - just sayin'.

As for the play, I wrote it last year as a response to some sudden changes I noticed regarding my community. Oh, that's too vague so here is the synopsis for Bed Bugs and Hot Pockets: In a society that depends on technology, outsourcing and mass surveillance, jobs at CVS have disappeared. Bill has worked at CVS for years and is the last employee standing. Connie, a CVS customer, regularly stops by the store just to shoot the shit with Bill. On this day their conversation comes to an abrupt halt.

If there is anything great that came from this experience thus far, I would say it would be the fact that both of my nieces, Kavi and Priya, made fantastic posters promoting my showcase for Bed Bugs and Hot Pockets. I was a guest on a phenomenal podcast called Beginnings hosted by Andy Beckerman.
Andy was a philosophy grad student til he turned to comedy. I went to law school and soon thereafter quickly turned to music...and then comedy. He was wearing a Pavement ist Rad t-shirt during the interview! I own the very same t-shirt! Needless to say, my conversation with Andy was one of my all time favorite conversations.
I love the soundtrack to my own film! The film itself will premiere online via Vimeo tomorrow. Beyond the notion of having to get a visual and narrative story out of my brain, creating a soundtrack was one of the highlights of completing this film project. Here's the story behind the music!

Demon Contacts by Love As Laughter
Sam Jayne and friends make up Love As Laughter. While on tour with David Cross years ago, we spent the night at Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse’s home. Throughout the night, Isaac was playing album after album by Love As Laughter and I was hooked. As luck would have it Sam Jayne happened to move to NYC when I did. Since then I have performed with him many times and just like Isaac Brock, have become an obsessive fan.

Take It by Mighty Challenger
Tom Gluibizzi, formerly of Psychic Ills, is Mighty Challenger. Tom played bass with me while I was the bandleader for the Shoegasms for comedian John Early’s show Showgasm. I was quickly impressed by Tom’s musicianship and laid back attitude and asked to hear tracks from his newest project. Instantly, I knew Tom’s music had to be in this film.

Little Smug Supper Club by Ted Leo
Everyone knows who Ted Leo is. He’s a punk rocker, a rocker, a crooner, an activist, a supporter and a fighter. Ted is a prolific artist and he sent me so many brilliant unreleased tracks of which I wished I could have used them all. The Little Smug Supper Club brings toin the film was the icing on the cake in .

Disco Moon by <a contents="K. Michelle DuBois
Michelle DuBois is my very best childhood friend with whom I founded my first rock n’ roll band Ultrababyfat. She is hands down one of the most talented songwriters I have ever known. Coincidentally two of her songs from her solo album Lux Capone are featured in SOOAC. Also of special note, Michelle’s father, Tim Dubois has written 5 #1 hit songs, and her brother Chris has written 14 #1 hits songs in Nashville. So needless to say, music is in her blood. Her first solo release Lux Capone is brilliant. She is currently moonlighting with the Rock*A*Teens.

Star Treatment by Shonali Bhowmik
This track comes from my solo album, 100 Oaks Revival. He should be a huge rock star but finds distributing peach and apples for farmer’s markets in GA and TN much more rewarding. His music is raw, frenetic, garage rock. Special note, Brandon once wore a turban, called himself Cognac and led the Gories inspired band, The Telepathics of which I was also a member.

Floating by Marcellus Hall and the Hostages
Marcellus Hall is a hero to me. He was the front man of the bands Railroad Jerk and White Hassle. His current solo project (with the Hostages) just released their newest album Afterglow and has released another album, The Final Line, on Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse’s own label. Marcellus is also a well-known illustrator who works with the likes of the New Yorker, The New York Times, The Atlantic as well as illustrating children’s books.

Noise Parade by Shannon Wright
Former Touch n’ Go, Quarterstick recording artist, Shannon Wright is a rock n’ roll goddess. This song comes from Shannon’s latest release In Film Sound. I have known Shannon since we were struggling musicians waiting tables at Grant Central Pizza in Atlanta, Georgia. Shannon has always been a true artist. Her raw emotion and primal physicality during live performances are one of a kind. I remember seeing her opening for Nick Cave and Sleater Kinney on separate occasions, and seeing the audience members with their mouths agape. Her popularity in Europe has soared since her collaboration with Yann Tiersen in 2010 and is now supported by a French label. Shannon is a reminder of what all rock n’ roll should be as is reiterated in my film.

Charlemagne by Tenement Halls
Merge recording artist, Tenement Halls is Chris Lopez (also leader of The Rock*A*Teens) and friends. Chris made the TH album, Knitting Needles & Bicycle Bells, while his other band was on hiatus. The album brings together a solid lineup of Chris Lopez’ haunting gothic southern indie rock anthems. As of now his band, the RATS are back! I discovered Chris’ music while living in Atlanta, where The Rock*A*Teens quickly became one of my favorite bands of all time. I want the world to hear Chris’ music as well does Mac McCaughan (Superchunk and Merge Records) and so many other indie rock stars. While at my gym, I heard The New Pornographers AND The Shins doing separate covers of The Rock*A*Teens. Yeah I know…my gym is cool. As for the song Charlemagne, it’s a cinematic love song for the ages.

I looked up and saw the most unlikely Michael Jackson character. He was wearing beige sweatpants hiked up to above his belly button, an off pink t shirt, and was probably 50+ years old. He started gliding around and contorting his body in front of our table, after he saw that we were the only ones who were interested out of the 30 or so tables around us. His dancing didn't match the skills of MJ, in fact he was sort of awful....no he was awesome. I am certain that I will never see someone like him again - someone with his own original weird moves, a no-fashion ensemble, an obliviousness to what anyone thought of his performance skills. He brought me so much happiness. Other folks around us were so serious and scoffed at him when he asked for tips. I was in awe of him. If you know me, I am certain you believe me. It takes courage in doing your own thing and not giving a crap what people think. In the end, you are bound to bring someone some happiness in just witnessing you do it.

Meanwhile the Rock*A*Teens are back doing shows after a ten year hiatus! My mind was blown. Why did this end? Bring it back. Won't you take me to Funky Town? Cross over, all skate, couple skate. I guess it never left - like Xanadu, we still have a place to go where neon lights still shine, Roller Jam USA in Staten Island. Saturday nights are adult night. Check out this scene from the movie Roller Boogie w Linda Blair. I'm the guy that does the back bend on the skating rink and pops back up and repositions his hat. Although it's all in my head, I still dream of being that good on skates. The song is Boogie Wonderland by Earth, Wind and Fire.

ROLLER BOOGIE:
S

Last month, I got to attend the first screening my short film, Sardines Out of A Can at a film festival. This was the first year of the Chattanooga Film Festival, and although I was only there for one night and two days, I had a great time at the fest and in Chattanooga. The screening was very special for me. My mom, dad and my great childhood friend Kim Murrey (of Nashville) accompanied me to Chattanooga from Nashville. Was fantastic to hear my mom laughing out loud and my dad's first comment after the screening - "Did you have a make up person because....?" as he points to his face...! He keeps me humble. I was honored to screen my film amongst so many great films and lovely to meet good people and see old friends. The weekend after that, Jasper and I spent a weekend in Muskogee, Oklahoma at the Bare Bones International Film and Music Festival to screen SOOAC. Shlron Ray and Oscar, the husband and wife team who run the festival are freaking amazing - working nonstop all the while maintaining a smile and seemingly enjoying themselves. We had a great time - stayed at the new La Quinta Inn. Met some awesome filmmakers from around the world, got to eat lots of Bar-B-Cue, went to the Azalea Day parade, and got to eat a Trash Can at Paul's Diner. See below! Happy to report that we won the Best Romantic Comedy Short Film award at Bare Bones. Something reaffirming about going to Chattanooga and Muskogee and being reminded of all the real people, great artists, and communities doing things their own way - creating an event together, with no big money attached to celebrate independent art- thank goodness those things still exist. Special shout out to my new friends whom I met in Oklahoma: Moko, Azumi, Uta, Amir and John! Let's make a film now. Oh and we are going to Madrid International Film Festival in July.

SARDINES OUT OF A CAN TRAILER:

Shonali Bhowmiktag:shonalibhowmik.com,2005:Post/31299602014-04-19T21:16:28-04:002017-01-13T19:29:49-05:00Tigers & Monkeys CD Release Party “The Animals Will...

Tigers & Monkeys CD Release Party “The Animals Will Forgive Us Again” at Union Hall in Park Slope, Brooklyn.
Shonali Bhowmiktag:shonalibhowmik.com,2005:Post/31299612014-04-19T21:14:14-04:002017-01-13T19:29:49-05:00Jason has his own cooking show. The weather here, as well as most of the East Coast has been FREAKING COLD! Brr.."it sure is cold out Aqua SleepMan." Anyone? My Nashville friends? But if you are fortunate to have some furry earmuffs like myself, you are weathering the cold with very few complaints. Since late October, I travelled to Los Angeles, Savannah, GA, Charlotte, NC and Minneapolis with Sardines Out of A Can. Thanks to all of you that came to the screenings. I had a spectacular time. On a personal note, I was so touched to share some time with so many old friends in Charlotte, NC, but especially Chris Piegler who came to the show despite his facing some serious health issues. He passed away a few weeks ago, and I feel so fortunate to have laughed with him only a few months ago. Love to you Chris!

In other news, I have made a statement about marriage. I write this because I have to share how truly mind blowing this experience was for me. For those of you that are unfamiliar with the camp, "Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls is a non-profit music and mentoring program that empowers girls and women through music education, volunteerism, and activities that foster self-respect, leadership skills, creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration." I worked as a band coach for a 5 year old group, and as a counselor/workshop leader for the 8-18 year old group - the culmination of which was a Band Showcase on Saturday at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. Throughout both weeks, I was in awe of the talent, intelligence and fearlessness I witnessed. I saw the girls face new challenges and overcome fears on a daily basis. We shared our excitement about music, and hearing about their love of One Direction, The Weeknd and Marina and the Diamonds took me back to a time when I too was a little girl and my obsession with music had just begun. The general camp philosophy is one we should all strive to follow, which is to look out for each other, to cherish community, to build a sense of togetherness through inclusion and to take risks. During a panel discussion, which my friend Mia Juhng led for the older girls, we discussed ways music could possibly be used within a number of different career paths - from being an architect or a baker to being a doctor or a stunt woman. It was after that workshop that I talked to a teenager who loves Anthrax and Slayer and wants to be both a musician and a surgeon when she grows up. She was looking for encouragement and advice and I of course am the EXACT person to give it. Do you understand how rad that is? She wants to be a musician and a surgeon! We talked about time management and how the "slow and steady" work ethic usually enables us to accomplish anything and everything. As for the showcase, I truly don't know how to articulate what I felt while watching those 85 girls. Each girl put together a band, created a song and performed that song within 1 week of meeting each other! It was stunning and it is something everyone needs to witness for themselves. There is one more Rock Camp session coming up this summer, the week after next and the showcase venue is TBA. The camp is operated by the efforts of volunteers, and donations (tax-exempt) - so if you'd like to get involved please go to the website. I beyond highly recommend it. Also there is a Bowlathon coming up in September. Want to put together a team?

Alright this part of my blog is not as cheery at the first part, it's important to me. This past Friday evening after completing an exhilarating Rock Camp week, I decided I needed to watch the Blurred Lines video - this summer's hit song. I for some reason feel the need to know what's happening in the world of main stream music and at this point I'm definitely late to the Blurred Lines listening party - better late than never, right? or this case perhaps not. I clicked the search button and saw that the video had over 119 million views. The song is sung by Robin Thicke (Alan Thicke's son - remember Growing Pains), featuring Pharrell and T.I. Now those things do not equate with no good for me, I like lots of main stream pop hit songs. The song's music is not so offensive - nice hooky dance beat, but the visuals and the lyrics, whew! After a week of working with strong, intelligent, talented young girls, whom are ready to take on the world on their own terms - watching a bunch of hokey guys with hot supermodel types saunter around in a semi-naked state while holding goats, and having their hair tethered to Thicke's hand - as he gently yanks on their hair as if the women are animals - was just enough to make my stomach hurt. All I could think was, this is what women and girls are still up against in 2013! I mean there was no real shock value, just the idea that this is what is considered sexy....I know not all guys really believe that "I know you want it" and "being the hottest bitch in this place" sounds sexy to a woman - but for it to be the summer hit song, ewwwwwww! You may think I am being too uptight or sensitive (perhaps you're right- perhaps I'm a hypocrite, b/c I love Howard Stern- another discussion altogether), that this is just a song about animalistic sex, but I am just relaying to you how I felt watching it after being with all those rad girls at rock camp. Thinking of them tethered by their hair to a guy sauntering them around like a billy goat, saying he is going to "take a Good Girl" just made me feel sick (and also within this week the Cleveland kidnapper/rapist Castro makes the comment that his victims often asked him for sex and that he had consensual sex - this may seem like I a big stretch - but this mentality of posession and "You know you want it" came together in my head). I did quickly look for a comedy parody of the Blurred Lines video from a female's point of view and just as I suspected, comediennes, Nikki and Sara made one for the female demographic. YAY!!! It is so funny. So here is a moment for you to laugh!

I just had to share this with you. For some reason, in recent decades, women have been awfully quiet when it comes to the way mainstream media depicts us or doesn't depict us. Perhaps it's the notion that it's a waste of time, like banging your head against a wall and nothing will ever change. I am unsure, but after witnessing such brilliant young girls take risks and face their fears, I realize it is my duty to do the best I can in helping them achieve their full potential. I know these issues are much more complicated than this little blog post can begin to discuss, but I'm hoping, at the least this is a good beginning.

I am one of those ladies that has to be reminded by friends that it's time to put on new polish. I don't think twice about having only a few speckles of color on my toes and fingers. However, everytime I get "my nails did" I have a little more pep in my step and I do that a lot more during the summer months. Of course my sense of pride lasts about a day, since my nails start to flake immediately, thus restarting the cycle of being bummed that the color disappears so quickly and deciding I will just deall with shitty looking nails until I can't take it no more. I do paint my nails on some occasions but I never come close to the perfection of the ladies at Spring Nails on Williams Street. Had to share my carpet. I love it. Reminds me of the ocean. I need to think of as many tranquil thoughts as possible because as of the last three weeks, what was once an empty lot (I knew our luck would run out) has become a construction site. In NYC that means, the construction of a 34 story skyscraper that will take at least a year to build. The construction crew starts starts banging on my medulla at about 7 am every morning and now have extended their work schedule to include Saturdays. So there is only one day of peace in this neighborhood these days, and it is to go on for an ENTIRE YEAR!!!. Would Mayor Bloomberg put up with such racket? Does anyone out there know the rules on construction and sound ordinances in NYC? I guess I could google it on my own.

So the summer heat is here in NYC. While I was out on July 4th, a friend of mine from Baton Rouge looked up the temperature of Baton Rouge and NYC. He was right, NYC is hotter right now. I have already been to two beaches - Fire Island, NY and Duck, NC; and upstate, Buskirk, NY where 100 Oaks Revival played an awesome wedding party, with Pottymouth, House of Blondes, and Buke and Gase. All locations were beautiful, tranquil, and relaxing. Look at that swimming hole in Buskirk. We even saw a U.F.O. You see it? Don't tell anyone.

As for my creative endeavors, I have been working on some entirely new projects. At the end of May, I wrote, directed, and produced a new short film (30-40 min short - not the regular 3 minutes I am accustomed to) for which its currently in the editing phase. I realized that at this point in my artistic life, I have no reason to not do what I want. I have noticed that lots of folks categorize themselves as being only one thing - "I am a writer." "I am a musician." " I am a stock broker." "I am a lawyer." But i have yet to meet a person for which those things actually fully describe who they are. Rather it is an aspect of who they are. I have never felt as if I was one thing. I do know I am a musician. But I am also a math person. I am a laywer. I am also a writer. I was an event producer. I was an aerobics instructor once upon a time. I am about to become a girl's rock camp counselor. I am so excited! You get the point. I guess I am still justifying to myself why I feel the need to share a film project with everyone. As a close friend of mine said the other day, "you don't need to justify anything to anyone." So we'll see how it goes, but my goal was to do a project that combines the talents of my quick witted funny talented friends (John Early, Adam Wade, Christian Felix) along with those of my brilliant musician friends (Shannon Wright, K Michelle DuBois, Marcellus Hall, Sam Jayne, Ted Leo, Mighty Challenger, and the list goes on). I believe it will be called "Sardines Out of A Can" but am still figuring it out. In other news, I also just shot what will be the first episode of a new web series, I created called "Shayla Hates Celebrities" with some funny folks (Katina Corrao, Le'Ronn McGowan, Eliot Glaser, Wyatt Cenac, and Kenny Leinhardt). I will leave it at that. I hope to be sharing all these projects with you soon - so soon! Here are some pics from the Sardines shoot.

In music news, I just discovered 10 Tigers and Monkeys tracks that have not been shared with the world! So look for a downloadable album coming to you soon! AND check out this video by one of my new favorite bands. An all women group from London, called Savages. They just released their first full length release Silence Yourself - reminiscent of the era of Joy Division, Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Echo and the Bunnymen. Critics are gushing about them - which usually makes me cynical - but their album is visceral, sexy, and sheer RAWK. I am going to see them on Thursday night at Webster Hall. Happy I will see them before they play Madison Square Garden. I hate seeing bands in big venues. So not fun! I think they have a show here in a few months at Terminal 5.
Here's their video!

It's also taking me some time to readjust to the sleepiness and monochromatic color scheme (overcast skies, black down coats everywhere) of NYC. I know, but seriously right now NYC seems tired (literally) compared to the vibrancy, noise, traffic, smells, and colors found in the cities of Hyderabad or Kolkata. I was lucky enough to accompany my parents to their native land on the special occasion of my cousin Dipak's wedding in West Bengal. I have not travelled to India in ten years, and while so much has changed (everyone has a cell phone, women wear jeans and drive scooters) I was comforted by the visuals of beautiful women in their colorful saris, road side markets with fresh vegetables and fruits, and cows and goats roaming the streets in the middle of traffic jams filled with scooters, rickshaws, and Marutis. Dipak's wedding to beautiful Sharmistha was also the first Indian wedding I have attended in India. The Indian feasts, the various traditional wedding ceremonies spanning over four days, the wonderful extended family that came from all over the country, and the chance to share this special time with my parents made for a trip that I will never forget. Although I can speak and understand a little Bengali, I chose broken English with a strong Indian accent to get me through most of my trip. It worked well. We traveled from West Bengal down south to Andrha Pradesh to see my mom's family in which they speak Telegu and English. I have no idea how to speak Telegu and still enjoyed going to see a Telugu blockbuster film at the Cinemax Theater in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad called Ongole Gitta. My mom's family actually lives in Ongole, so that was a cool coincidence. Everywhere we travelled in India, we were lucky to have generous family members and friends eager to show us a great time be it with fantastic tasty home cooked meals, gifts, shopping, scenic drives, applying mendhi to my hands (Susmita), or my favorite - sharing laughs.

As for the exhausting and humorous aspects of this trip, throughout most of my trip I decided to stay in the same room if not bed with my parents. That's right. I have to say we managed quite well although I would often wake up in the middle of the night with a mosquito buzzing in my ear and giant welts on my forehead. I did get sick the few times I ventured off the bottled water path, which is always awful. I should have listened to the southern American gentleman whom I overheard on the plane to India advising a British couple, "It's not a matter of IF you get sick, it's a matter of WHEN, so you may as well go ahead and start taking your Cipro now." Needless to say, I started taking mine immediately after eating my first meal in India ( I was too shy to demand bottled water but that shyness ended immediately after meal one). But still this was the first trip to India in which I was sick only a day at a time (on three occasions) which was a great success for me! I did get some of the same questions I've received on past trips to India, "What type of meat do you eat? Not cows right?", "Do you consider yourself American or Indian?", and "Why aren't you married?", but I have to admit I received them much less often than on trips in the past so that was nice. Oh, and let's not forget the last night I was in India, I was riding on a van rickshaw (a bicycle rickshaw with a pallet attached) in my new chudidhar/salwar and my scarf got caught in the wheel. Before I could stop the driver, the scarf tightened so tightly around my arm that it flipped me off the rickshaw on to the street. I was not hurt and was laughing hysterically when everyone was stopping to help me. I am still laughing now thinking of it. I just kept hearing my niece Rani telling the driver in Bengali "She's not used to wearing these clothes." That made me laugh harder. I've attached some of the images from my trip. Hope you enjoy them.

Shonali Bhowmiktag:shonalibhowmik.com,2005:Post/2639702012-12-09T18:00:00-05:002021-09-24T10:29:37-04:00Os Mutantes, Sandy, White House Christmas Party and.... where to spend Christmas? So many firsts happening this year - saw Madonna a few weeks ago, Nets vs. Knicks game this week at Barclays Center, The Radio City Christmas Spectacular with my nieces this coming weekend! While all these things are fantastic, then there are those things which you don't get to see. I am bummed right now because I am not seeing Os Mutantes and they are playing at Le Poisson Rouge which is only a few subway stops away. New York has just way too much going on to keep up with. For those of you who don't live here, I know it sounds like I am rubbing it in your face, but at any point on any given day, some awesome event is happening in NYC that only you would love and dream of doing but will have no knowledge at all it is happening. Not because you aren't hip or happening, but because it takes too much time to figure it all out. I find out about things too late or too far in advance and then there are things such as costs and time which of course limit the amount of entertainment I get to see. I hate feeling like I've missed out, but it is an every day ocurrence here in NYC.

I have to say that I only recently started listening to Os Mutantes, which is way late in the game since they are a group that started in the 1960's. Thanks to my friend's toddler daughter (at age 3, I realized she had the best taste in music), some of my hipster music friends, Beck and Jay-Z, I started paying attention to their Brazilian psychedelic brand of rock n' roll last year. I know, so not cool. I should have known earlier. So in case you are behind the times, here is a link to a French TV show performance in the 1960's and a song called A Minha Menina. Os Mutantes combines sounds of Spanish dance music, electronica, Ventures style surf guitars, mariachi, bossa nova, Beatles pop harmonies, American soul music, and random strange pychedelic sounds adding a texture of suspense and surprise at all times. oooh...see! Moving on....

Since I wrote last, the NYC area was hit hard by Super Storn Sandy. I live only a few blocks away from the South Street Seaport which was devastated by the storm and feel very lucky that I got away with only losing power for a week and heat for two weeks. The internet is still down right now (over 6 weeks now). So as you know, it was a tale of two cities on the island of Manhattan. All the lights were out below 34th for an entire week and those above 34th from what I hear were completely unaffected. The lower part of the city where I live, became almost completely deserted. At least it seemed that way. I rode my bike uptown on empty streets many days to eat w friends who were charging phones at various charging stations in areas where power existed. With traffic lights and subways down, it was surreal to ride my bike back home through the complete darkness. Seriously, I would look to my right and the West Village was pitch black. I would look to my left and the East Village was pitch black. In many ways I embraced the moment as one that I perhaps would never experience again. I am certain that although most New Yorkers were prepared for the storm, we had no idea as to what level of devastation Sandy could bring. We saw our city paralyzed. Everyone was frozen. And although it was beyond awful for so many people, in a positive sense it forced people to stop and perhaps to think about how complex our lives are, how delicate the infrastructure that provides for our communties is, how rare it is that we spend time together with friends or family, or perhaps to not think at all. Obviously there are folks in this area that will feel the effects of Sandy for years to come - Staten Island, Breezy Point, Rockaway Beach, and Coney Island are just some of the areas that were hit extra hard. The relief effort will be ongoing throughout the year. It is easy to volunteer through NY Cares if you are so inclined. I recommend it. Here is a pic of my friend Hyemi and I as we were helping the American Red Cross the week after the storm hit us.

(INTERRUPT THE FLOW OF BLOG ENTRY HERE) I fell asleep last night while writing this and woke up this morning to get not one or two but three texts/emails regarding how amazing the Os Mutantes show was last night! Jeez! Okay, I am sick now. (FLOW CONTINUES HERE)

Well, the holiday season is upon us and I am booked for a number of holiday parties within the next two weeks. I'm not bragging, it's just the NY way of life. Ooh, that sounded so pretentious.... I guess I am bragging. Sheesh. I attended my first holiday party of the year last week. I was fortunate enough to be invited to join my sister at her Christmas Office Party. I of course said yes, albeit I would have to ride the Vamoose bus to DC to attend. My sister is the Deputy Cabinet Secretary of the White House and Special Assistant to the President. I rarely get to go on about her, because she likes it that way. She is humble and keeps a low profile. But she is without a doubt a badass; a smart, generous, talented, super hard working woman, mother of two, who is beyond deserving of all the successes that have come to her. I wrote a short post regarding the party on my friend Jason Lam's food blog, Me So Hungry with more details. The stunning decorations, portrait paintings, food, and champagne were way beyond my expectations. The best part of the party was that I got to spend a wonderful afternoon with my sister, meet her many friends and share in their excitement of working at the White House. Also the icing on the cake was that I was able to shake the First Lady (only words that came from me were "You're so gorgeous!") and the President's hands at the end of the evening. I am certain that this will be the most memorable Office Christmas Party that I will have ever attended, however - there was the one a few years back that may be in contention, yeah friends, you remember the one at Bayard's?!......whew - you know who you are...we'll leave it at that.

Not sure where I am spending Christmas as of yet. I have spent almost every Christmas in Nashville, TN, my hometown, but this year Los Angeles, CA is in contention along with NYC. We'll see! I hope you all have the happiest of holidays.
Shonali Bhowmiktag:shonalibhowmik.com,2005:Post/2346052012-10-17T10:55:00-04:002017-02-01T19:12:44-05:00Brooklyn Beta Conference 2012 - Make Something You Love Conference

Last week I was privileged to perform at Brooklyn Beta 2012 Conference - (Oct 10,11, and 12th ) at The Invisible Dog in Brooklyn. The website describes the conference:
"Brooklyn Beta is a small, friendly web conference aimed at the “work hard and be nice to people” crowd. Once a year, we welcome some of the friendliest web designers, developers, and entrepreneurs to Brooklyn, and we invite speakers to highlight meaningful problems that need our help. Our goal is to inspire you to make something you love, so we get all the people who can turn an idea into reality in one place and try our best to make it happen."

So although this conference is formally defined as a place for web based creators to talk, hang, and become inspired, it was great that three music performances (one each day) were scheduled throughout the conference. The attendees are tied by a common thread. They are all folks who creatively and artistically use the web to solve problems and in turn hoping to make the world a better place. Very punk rock.

The formal schedule for the conference is put together so that folks have no idea who is speaking or performing ahead of time, but rather the focus is just to create a scenario where folks get together, share their passions and love for what they create. I instantly relate to that mindset and felt a kinship for all the creators in the hall. The intimate setting was envigorating, warm, creative, smart, inspiring, exciting, and stimulating (forgive me for being repetitive)...I could go on. It was just that good. Surprise speakers on Day 2 included politician Cory Booker, internet pioneer Ted Nelson, and Behance founder Scott Belsky. On the same day, I shared a story with the attendees (Ted Leo performed Wed., Amy Klein performed on Friday) regarding the slow build up to the moment I would finally embrace calling myself a musician/performer: an artist. It goes without question, most us define ourselves by our careers: how we make money; but often times bill-paying job have nothing to do with who we are. Do you believe how profound I am!? So there you have it, among other things I am an artist and my coming out party was at Brooklyn Beta! Ha. I wouldn't have known it beforehand, but I belonged at Brooklyn Beta. After all, they are artists and creators using their talents to connect, create a community, with hopes of making the world a better place. Very punk rock!
The podcast is hosted by myself and my great friend Christian Felix. We hit it off while working as temporary workers on a big case at a huge Manhattan law firm years ago when I first moved to the city. We share a love of laughing and giving each other hell. We can easily talk about all that's going on in our lives for hours when it feels as though only a few minutes have passed. We were destined to become podcast partners. Not sure how to classify what we are doing. Our iTunes description says "They may be called hipsters, old school, mainstream, irreverent, classic, country, gangster, or rock n' roll. All labels apply." See what I mean. Each show includes a conversation with a special guest, music, news and a conversation about our own lives. We just completed our 5th episode, and our guests have been fabulous, including Jason Lam - food blogger & rock 'n roller, Duane Harriott - seminal music guru and DJ to the stars, John Early, a young brilliant actor and stand up comedian, Kenny Lienhardt - legendary Bowery Ballroom sound man and host of the Urban Angler fishing show, and lastly my childhood friend Charlest Scott - endurance athlete, writer, and family adventurer. Just in case you were wondering, we will be getting lots more lady guests on in the upcoming shows...schedules are being worked out as I type. There you have it. Honestly with no formal promotion we have been shocked at the number of downloads we have accumulated (almost 8,000) . Someone is enjoying the show in the Phillipines and Bahrain. Oh, also you can subscribe for free to We Don't Know via our Itunes feed and listen as you work, do the laundry, clean your apartment, or sit staring at your computer. For the last two months I have managed to spend approximately 95% less time on the computer (no FB, internet surfing for fun, no internet shopping), which is not to say I accomplished lots more with my time. Only that I did things that I would not have otherwise done. I have seen movies in actual theaters, gone outside more often to walk - hike - and bike, and have been able to make a big dent in catching up on my lack of sleep. I wonder if my brain has changed in anyway. Who knows, but at the least I can say the experience has been rejuvenating. I am certain a computer leave of absence is not for everyone (also note this has not been a 100% absence from the old Mac Book) but for those of you that try it out, it may force you to discover something about yourself that you never would have learned on your computer.

The night before last, I saw this wonderful documentary at the Angelika Theater called Searching for Sugar Man, about the musician peformer Sixto Rodriguez. I was lucky that I did not go online to see the trailer before I saw the movie, which is usually what I would do. Instead I went to the movie, not knowing anything but the beautiful music of Rodriguez. Thank goodness for that. Everything that unfolded on the screen, was the first that I had known of Rodriguez' story. I am telling you now. Go see this film and do not do any research on Rodriguez or the movie before you see it. I mean it. I learned lots regarding Rodriguez in turn regarding myself from seeing this film. Who knows you may be as lucky as I was. I hope you are.
Here is Rodriguez song Sugar Man.

Oh and in the past week, I also saw Neil Young live at Red Rocks in Colorado, and I saw Mike Tyson in the Undisputed Truth (one-man show) live on Broadway. Both of these live shows were out of this world. Lucky me.
Shonali Bhowmiktag:shonalibhowmik.com,2005:Post/1842322012-06-27T16:15:14-04:002021-11-04T14:15:13-04:00My friend K. Michelle DuBois and her new album Lux Capone

Do you remember the day you met your best childhood friend? I remember when I first saw Michelle from afar. She was the new kid in elementary school. She was so pretty and had a cool short Dorothy Hamill like haircut. Super different from us Nashville girls. She had a unique style and I seriously developed a girl crush. I wanted to know her. Upon first sight, she seemed shy and quiet. But I was partially wrong. Michelle has always been shy upon meeting her initially, but even back then she was a full out performer. She was a super silly, smarty pants, hilarious, talented little girl. Who would have known that she would be the one friend that I have laughed with more than any other person in my life. We connected in many ways, but music and laughter was the connection that changed my life. That chemistry from back in elementary school created a longlasting friendship which has become a big part of who I am. We started playing and writing music together as kids - the violin, clarinet, guitar. We were on the dance committee together in Jr. High and demanded our principal get a silver mirror glass disco ball. While we both had relatively strict parents, somehow they allowed us to fly to Oklahoma to see Duran Duran as teenagers. We went to every rock show in Nashville as soon as we were of age. We were given guitars by rock n' roll boyfriends in college and as many of you know we eventually became partners in a rock n' roll band as adults, complete with recording deals, touring schedules, sleeping on floors together, living together for years. Our personal lives were meshed together and we loved it - at one point our boyfriends lived together and at another point our boyfriends were brothers, and actually now our boyfriends both have the initials J.P. Of course now I live in NYC, and Michelle is in Atlanta, GA but we always talk about making an album together when we are 80 years old. I am certain it will rock. Our partnership has never ended and she influences me on a daily basis.

That's us in Jr. High. We were even color coordinated! I love my headband and Michelle's sailor shirt. Alright, so enough rambling - you get it, I love Michelle.

I am writing this because I wanted to share with you something a bit more personal regarding my influences. This friend of mine, K. Michelle Dubois is a genius musician. I feel so lucky to have performed and composed music with her for so long. She just put out a solo release, which I am listening to right now. I love it. It is called Lux Capone. You should download it now. It is a perfect summer breezy pop album, with the sweetness and the sour which I crave, The dissonant sounds are reminiscent of a beautiful summer storm. I will let you decide for yourself.

Click this link to her album.

Michelle has also released music with her band Luigi which you can find on her site.
Here is the link to Michelle's site.

Oh how weird I am clicking on to her site right now while listening to her album. So I am hearing, Star's Lament (Ultrababyfat) playing over Footsteps on Wingspan (from her solo album) and it sounds amazing!!!

Enjoy!

Shonali Bhowmiktag:shonalibhowmik.com,2005:Post/1716292012-05-22T20:23:48-04:002017-02-01T17:57:42-05:00Apparently I am only traveling to cities that start with the letter "N" this spring...We are only a month away til the first day of summer and here in New York, I have worn a rainjacket or jacket to work for the last few weeks. Folks complain here about the killer summer heat all the time, which probably only comes to NY two to three weeks out of the year since I have lived here. No judgement. Everyone needs something to complain about, right? But still, please I need some real warmth in NYC. It is the best to be here in the summer time, all the cool kids go to their country homes, and those of us that only pay rent in one city have no choice but to stay here. I love NYC in the summertime. It becomes quiet and somewhat quaint.

As for Spring 2012, this one has flown by. In March, I was the musical guest on a couple of episodes of a new NPR Trivia Game Show called "Ask Me Another" which is just now being aired. Look for it, listen to it, talk about it. It is a geek's dream radio show which means if you are reading this blog you would surely enjoy it.
As for April and May, I traveled to Nashville, TN, my hometown, and to New Orleans, LA for Jazz Fest 2012 for fun in the swamplands. I performed a bunch with my bands and in comedy shows- 100 Oaks Revival shows, Tigers and Monkeys, and Variety Shac. I always love explaining to comedy audiences how my music is not comedy music as in the vein of Tenacious D or Flight of the Conchords, but rather that I got involved initially in the comedy world, becuase comedians love the fact that I laugh loudly at them as well as they love (I am putting words into their mouths) my music (whether you classify my music as serious or not will be reserved for a future blog entry).

So we are coming upon June and with it comes more clarity as to my creative goals. Shhshshshs, I can't tell you. I must do. But I am excited, aren't you? (generic response needed here, like "Why yes, we are excited for you!"). I am excited for you, whatever it is that you may be doing or not doing that is. I am serious. Someone needs to be excited for you don't you think? Well here are a couple of links to some short vids I took over the spring, to emphasize my excitement.
But I will tell you right now that I am listening to Skip Spence's Oar . My friend Austin gave me the CD last year when I was explaining to him that the basic tracks for 100 Oaks Revival was recorded initially in Nashville live within a few days. Spence's Oar was recorded in 1969, in Nashville in a similar fashion only Skip Spence (formerly of Moby Grape) was on the brink of a mental breakdown or should I say he was losing his mind as he was recording. There is a frenetic energy, a simplicity, a looseness, but also some beautifully crafted sweet songs. Ah, snow on the ground! Reminds me of the children's book The Snowy Day, by Ezra Jack Keats. Do you know it? Loved that story, seeing the illustrations and touching the slick pages of that book as a child....I scraped up the bottom of the bag of my Belizean coffee beans purchased from a trip two years ago...yup. You probably would have thrown them away right? Too lazy to go out to buy more beans this morning, in pjs til noon and listened to my Tito Puente Cha Cha album. Those are my new earmuffs! Aren't they cute? Or do they look like I have grey mutton chops like Martin Van Buren? Those muffs are a life changer! But is life going to change on the information superhighway? I already had one life change today, don't need another.

Today, only one day after Wikipedia and Reddit went dark in protest of the proposed PIPA (Protect IP Act) and SOPA (Stop Piracy Act) legislation, the DOJ took down the MegaUpload site (on grounds of copyright infringement) and then Anonymous took responsibility for taking down RIAA, Universal Music, Justice.org, and MPAA sites. Today was also the first day that I had ever heard the term "Tango down" in terms of taking down a website for a temporary time period. I had only heard of MegaUpload last week. What the hell is happening? Although the SOPA and PIPA legislation was supposedly introduced as a protection for copywritten material, there is a sense that these bills will open the door to internet censorship and jeopardize the freedom we enjoy on the internet today.

It has been easy for us to take this little thing called the internet for granted for a long while now. Although I am not one that has an undying fear of tying ourselves to our gadgets (wait perhaps that's not true), I would be a fool to not notice how every second of our existence is usually tied to the web- be it through our phones or computers. Look at me now. After a day at work in front of a screen, I am sitting here in front of a screen eager to communicate with you.

Our finances, maps, movies, restaurants, emails, music, and friends all come to us straight through little boxes and screens. It's a struggle right? In one sense the need to attach ourselves cannot be good for our physical or mental health while we sit hunched over a keyboard looking at a screen. At the other end, we are conflicted because the ease and freedom with which we have to gain such entertaining, amusing, necessary, and complex information gives us our greatest ability to communicate and learn on a daily basis. With the world wide web, we have our most popular and useful venue for us to openly and abundantly communicate/gab.

So who knows where the web will go in the next decade? For now, we can help to keep this communication open and free between us all. Here is a letter from Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon suggesting we all get involved in this next phase of the fight. I am a big fan of Senator Wyden's for many reasons. One of which is my sister worked for him for years in the Senate, and consistently told me of his intelligence, wit, and courage.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/sen-ron-wyden/my-letter-to-the-internet_b_1214553.html

I hope not to be bumming you out with all this, just checking in and hoping you too are making your voice be heard. Here is a video to keep you laughing through all of this.
So today I am sick at home with a head cold, burning eyes, sinus congestion, and a sore throat. I had every intention of going to Rolfs German Restaurat this evening to sip on some mulled wine and soak in the fantastical over the top holiday decorations. Since I couldn't go, I just found a pic of Rolfs and had to share it with you.

I just walked into my apartment and pheweee!!! It stinks. I honestly usually have a very nice smelling abode, but it smells like something died in here. I have checked out the closets and don't see any evidence of death. Hopefully it was the trash that I just threw out but I don't understand how that smell just sneaks up on you. Finally the sandalwood incense my mom gave me years ago will go to good use. Mmmmmmm...... which leads me to why I am writing today! Mmmmmerrry Holidays!!! I am not complaining. I love the seasons, all four of them as they come in a row, but today the cold really made me feel the absence of summer. So here I am to recap what was the end of the summer rock tour for 100 Oaks Revival, August 2011/September 2011. I left you in Savannah, Georgia and we headed to Atlanta the very next day. Home of my former rock n' roll band, and more great friends. We arrived at the Highland Inn on Monday afternoon, not too far from one of my favorite old hangouts: the Righteous Room, the Majestic Diner, the Plaza Theatre and Little Five Points. It was nice for each of us to just have time to hang out and do our own things. Jeff did his regular 20 mile run. Jason and Matt found good food at Eats. Amy and I made an outing to Urban Outfitters. Later in the evening we all got to hang individually with old friends.

Show day was Tuesday at the EARL, with Smoke That City and the Georgia Fireflies both from Atlanta. Such talented musicians. Both were fantastic. Wednesday was our day in Nashville, Tennessee! Being that I am from Nashville, the band ate a glorious lunch cooked by my mom and dad at my home. Needless to say we were all so happy to have a home cooked meal, but check it out and you will understand why it wasn't just any home cooked meal. We had to rush from lunch to Grimey's New & Preloved Music, to perform an in-store in Grimey's amongst all the stacks of records and CD's at the behest of record shop co-owner Doyle Davis, one of the greatest guys in the world of rock n' roll record shops. You have to check it out while you are in Nashville! The last day of our tour was spent in Knoxville, Tennessee. We went straight to the studio at the WUTK radio station to do a live studio performance and interview with Benny Smith, the legendary station manager. A long time supporter of my music, it was beyond a pleasure to talk to Benny on the air. How in the heck did he know about the Prophecy? That is for you to figure out. Below are some pics of our Knoxville in-studio performance, dining experience, and our new amazing friends: the train folks we met at the Long Branch Saloon, also known as the Juggalos. There are amazing videos on youtube that catch the magic of that night in Knoxville (made by Bryan Oblivion) such as this one! Woo Woo! Alligator's Tale! Thanks to Cindy Quinan for taking care of us in Knoxville and the Waltz Bros and the Vintage for performing with us. I have been living in downtown NYC for two years now and although I live near a university and a hospital, it is usually rather quiet at night. But recently due to the ongoing Occupy Wall Street protests that have been happening in my neighborhood for the past four weeks, police horses have been traveling through the streets of downtown Manhattan. What's surprising is that the sound of hooves striking asphalt has been a soothing sound. I feel like I am in a time warp, where suddenly I imagine I am in Olde NY where horses are the only mode of transportation. I am wearing a matronly dress, drinking tea, using terms like "Ye" and "Here here". There seems to be no rational reason why the sound puts me at ease because it is only a reminder of the fragility of our times....but rather the sound makes me feel that I am existing in a simpler time, as New Yorkers did when computers, reality tv, cell phones, and video games were not a part of life (never mind that disease, gangs, racism, and sexism did). I know it doesn't make sense, but I am just going to close my eyes and enjoy. Whoa they just passed by again. Here, here!

I know you are wondering where Woowoo! Part 2 is....I promise it is coming! That is Atlanta, Nashville and Knoxville and I have got to share those stories with you.

Shonali Bhowmiktag:shonalibhowmik.com,2005:Post/1175472011-10-06T14:50:48-04:002022-01-17T05:47:59-05:00Variety Shac is tonight, October 6. Seriously can't believe it is already October. I still have the rest of the tour to catch up on. Honestly at this very moment I am listening to myself on my headphones to prepare for my show tonight. It's not that I don't know my own songs, but it's a mental warm up. So tonight I am excited to be hosting Variety Shac tonight at the Upright Citizen's Brigade Theater here in New York with my co-host Andrea Rosen, David Cross, Tom Shillue and Edmond Hawkins. We have been off for two months due to my touring and Andrea giving birth to a new baby boy named Odin Bean Gemberling. So needless to say, we are so happy to be back on stage at the UCB our regular stomping grounds for a new edition of Variety Shac. I promise I have to fill you in on the rest of the tour and my trip to the grocery store last night.

Don't David and Andrea look so sexy in these pics? Part 1 Our 100 Oaks Revival 2011 Southeastern jaunt ended this past Saturday and most of us are suffering from tour withdrawal. My tour mates on the road were Jason Lam, Amy Slonaker, Matt Gill and Jeff Sheinkopf. The highlights of the tour are endless but a few are posted below. The tour was just what the doctor ordered on my part. I got to soak up all the tastes and smells of some of my favorite southern cities: Charlotte, NC; Atlanta, GA; Savannah, GA; Charleston, SC; Knoxville, TN; and my hometown of Nashville, TN. My inhaler was always close by, due to the impending asthma attack threats caused by all my freaking hilarious friends down South. We started off the tour staying up way past our bedtimes in Charlotte, NC, catching up with my dear friend Scott Weaver (also known as MiMaw -redneck for granny) who DJ'd his humongous Shiprocked party right after our set at Evening Muse, where the lovely Alex Kastanas opened for us with her beautiful voice. Here are some scenes of Alex, and Shiprocked at Snug Harbor in Charlotte, NC.

After a night of nonstop laughing, Scott escorted us to an amazing Viet Namese restaurant (sorry don't know the name) and to downtown Charlotte to The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art where the art of Niki De Saint Phalle was displayed on the greens.

From Charlotte we were to head to Charleston, SC but had no idea if we could get there due to the impending hurricane. We rolled the dice and decided that Irene wasn't going to get in our way. We headed to a club called the Tin Roof which believe it or not, had a roof made of tin and arrived just after a torrential downpour. The Sticky Fingers crew (my longtime friends and former owners of the beloved BBQ chain) made it out in the rain and we rocked them like a hurricane. Yup, for real tho. Although that pic below below is from the Evening Muse in Charlotte .

We spent the Saturday in Charleston, SC like true rock stars hanging out at my friend Jeff Goldstein's pool and then hung out in downtown Charleston at the market, and eating BBQ at Sticky Fingers. No pool pics, but below is Jeff and his wife Ainsley caddy corner across from him. Jill (who lives in Brooklyn and joined us for a portion of the tour) is his cousin sitting beside him and she's also Matt's girlfriend. It's a small world after all. .

The trip to Savannah, GA from Charleston took no time at all. We played a big coffee shop called the Sentient Bean, where upon arrival we realized most folks would be listening to us without the listening enhancement of alcohol. It ended up that it didn't matter. The 4th Ward Afro Klezmer Orchestra from Atlanta joined us for what would be one of our most fun evenings on tour. Great friends, good music, late night, dancing and laughter - again just what the doctor ordered. I knew it was going to be good when my friend Steve Cox came in just after we got off the stage and hugged me and said "well I will let you get to what you got to do, cause I know you are about to go on stage." We laughed and laughed at the fact that he just simply got to the show after we finished our set. Wonk Wonk Wonk! Yup, cause that's just how we roll. Wes Daniel, my longtime friend, Savannah resident and owner of the most popular bar in Savannah called Hangfire, hosted us at his bar and we danced til the break of dawn. Let's just say after hearing things like Fat Albert and Rudy, and a story about obtaining one of Debbie Harry's hairs out of her head, the laughter meter was off the charts and I was thankful to have my inhaler. Artwork in Hangfire courtesy of the artists Panhandle Slim and Zteven.

Sunday was a day off in Savannah where we got to spend some time visiting with the Cox-Stanton family (highlights include playing Monkey Quest with Tex, and building a train track with Johnny). Later, Wes hosted us as his guests at his 70's style community swimming pool/cub called the Kensington Park Pool, complete with rainbow colored table umbrellas and white plastic pool furniture. Was so awesome. Wes made us some boiled peanuts and later that evening, even did us up real good for dinner with a good old southern fish fry at his home. Met a rock n' roll gal named Angel Bond at the fry who leads a band called Cusses. Loved her and gosh darnit if those peanuts and fish weren't sooo good. Also featured is an album by southern country (not redundant) artist Steven Cox, not to be confused - or perhaps to be confused with my friend Steven Cox below.

We are riding down to Charlotte today after a night in Richmond, VA. We pulled into Richmond, VA at 1:07 am precisely the time that an earthquake aftershock rumbled through Richmond. John Pollard our host, walked out to greet us in the dark thinking that we were in an 18 wheeler and would have to park our rig in his backyard. A great night of talk, sleep and a morning of perfectly scrambled eggs and bacon in a real backyard. Oh how sweet it is to be back in a van. Seriously. Doin' it, and doin it, and doin' it well. Riding right down to Hurricane Irene and knocking her out as we go. Here are pics of us doing what we do best. Eat!!! Jason made a remarkable find at this place by the gas station today. A fried porkchop sandwich from Cafe Soul for $1.99! You know what I am saying. Preparing my list of "have to do's" for my trip to my old stomping grounds. Each city on this upcoming tour means so much to me. Looking forward to some good old fashioned SOUL food as in good for the soul food. Oh yeah. So the lineup - Amy Slonaker, Matt Gill, and Jason Lam will be accompanying me. Jeff Sheinkopf is coming in from Seattle to play with us. While he played the keyboard parts on 100 Oaks Revival, he will be sitting in on the drums for the tour...also some keys. We will see ya'll real soon. Here is a link to Goodie Mob's Soul Food! So the 12 passenger van is rented as of today and plans are underway to hit the road at the end of August. The cities that I hear calling my name, are Charlotte, NC; Savannah, GA; Charleston, SC; Atlanta, GA; Knoxville, TN; and Nashville, TN Lots of folks to see, good food to eat, and great clubs to play. Also I am hoping to catch up on listening to lots of new music. In fact, if you have any good road trip CD's sitting around that you want to send me - do it. It looks like we may have room for one more person (requirements being low maintenance, not insane, and play keyboards) to come join us. Could that be you?

But I am focused, as I have been throughout my life. I am on a quest. I can't seem to stop searching for the perfect pair of blue jeans. My taste change daily, one day I want skinny legged, the next high waisted, the next flares but I think that I have finally come to a decision as to the most classic cut that never goes out of style. Ultimately I always go back to my pair of blue jeans that are the classic Levis mid waisted boot cut that I find are tougher and tougher to locate. I love them.

I can't believe that I've never written a song about blue jeans. I had been scouring the travel sites for cheap flights to foreign lands that would completely take me out of my out of my litte NYC box I call home and place me in a time and place that bore no resemblance to my own. I am happy to report that my flight did just that. I flew to Athens and rode the ferries to the islands of Paros, Naxos, Antiparos and Santorini. My mind was blown. The architecture -simple yet grand, the food -delectable, the people -warm and generous, the air fresh and the ocean literally sparkling blue. I came back reenergized and my head clear. So here I am feeling so good that I am possibly annoying. I am already eager to make plans to go to return to Greece, and also to the road in general. Yeah, I want to sing and play guitar in those cities that have supported me throughout my musical career. I am just now putting together a summer tour of the Southeastern US. I can hear you calling- Charlotte, Savannah, Atlanta, Nashville, Knoxville, Chattanooga, Charleston, Birmingham, Gainesville, which are just some of the cities that I have loved playing over the years and perhaps I will add a few new ones to the list. If you have any ideas feel free to email me.
Shonali Bhowmiktag:shonalibhowmik.com,2005:Post/988182011-05-02T22:30:00-04:002023-12-10T12:04:37-05:00May 1st. This is ridiculous. NYC Five Boro Bike Tour. How time flies when you are swamped with work and play. Yesterday I completed the 42 mile NYC Five Boro Bike Tour with some great friends and for a wonderful organization called Only Make Believe. For the first time I bought the padded bike shorts (thank goodness) last week which means that I have never been on a bike for any great length of time. Needless to say there was a small part of me that was scared to death of taking on this challenge. But I am here to say that the ride ended up a success, minor aches and pains in my calves just after the bike tour, but otherwise feeling great. There was one moment where my mind had to shift into overdrive and my ride was all mental - during the up hill battle of the Belt Parkway and the Verrazano Bridge into Staten Island. There were more than 32,000 bikers in the tour. Between the 8 year old boy, the 400 lb lady, and the guy with the prosthetic leg, I had plenty of inspiration to keep me in the game and then of course the main event was the city of New York, who kept cheering me on. The city is beyond mesmerizing and at many points I would catch myself, mumbling under my breath to myself saying "this is ridiculous." Yup, seriously.

Shonali Bhowmiktag:shonalibhowmik.com,2005:Post/960722011-03-29T11:05:00-04:002022-03-09T06:30:06-05:00Tax time with the Monterey Pop Festival - March 29
So last night I decided to stay up all night and finish compiling all my tax information for 2010. What to watch while doing such tedious work? With the impending closure of Borders downtown near my apartment, I had just bought a couple of DVDs on closeout. One being the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, a documentary by D.A. Pennebaker which I ended up watching entirely and then watched again while listening to the commentary with Lou Adler and D.A. Pennebaker. I am skeptical of most commentaries but both of the commentators are legendary characters in film and music- so theirs was good, very impromptue. D.A. Pennebaker said that before shooting he was unfamiliar with most of the artists at the festival (which include Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding, Janis Joplin and The Who) yet he and his crew got such compelling footage. Pennebaker made shooting the festival sound like a happy accident. He said something about bringing inexperienced photographers to shoot the festival who were actually musicans figuring things out as they went. They ended up capturing some of the most beautiful footage of musical performances I have seen. I am sure you've seen the Jimi Hendrix footage from that show, but perhaps not this performance of Ravi Shankar shredding on the sitar along with tabla player, Ustad Alla Rakha. So please enjoy and with my tax return money perhaps I'll buy a new camera and figure things out as they go.
Shonali Bhowmiktag:shonalibhowmik.com,2005:Post/956282011-03-23T20:53:57-04:002022-03-09T06:30:49-05:00100 Oaks Revival CD Release Pics? THANKS TO EVERYONE THAT CAME OUT TO THE SHOW! We had a fantastic time. Rusty Dungan and Hannibal Buress killed it opening up the show. In these pics, Brent Arnold on Cello, Amy Slonaker background vocals, Jody Bilinski -drums, Jason Lam - bass, Matthew Gill - guitar, Brendan Kenny - piano - additional players were Marcellus Hall, Jasper Patch and Matt Whyte. Do any of you have any pics from the show? Waiting on ones from the great Stefano Giovannini. Also if you think of one person that would like 100 Oaks Revival, tell them to come here. Word of mouth is the way this works these days. Lastly I just watched the Strokes on David Letterman. First album in five years - Julian Casablancas seemed ready to take on the world. The rest of the band looked pretty bored, perhaps it's just been a long time . Bootsy Collins on Jimmy Fallon right now and Friendly Fires to come. Don't think I can stay up to see them. Let me know how they were, will ya? THANKS AGAIN!

Shonali Bhowmiktag:shonalibhowmik.com,2005:Post/953132011-03-20T08:55:00-04:002022-03-09T06:29:06-05:00The day of 100 Oaks Revival CD Release! I joined some funny ladies, Sara Schaefer and Nikki Glaser last night for their awesome Podcast (#13) called You Had To Be There, which is the most appropriate name for their show. The comedy guest was Nate Bargatze. So I trek out to Brooklyn with my guitar, imagining that all of us would be cramped together in Sara's bedroom sitting on her bed recording the podcast on one mic we passed around. I was pleasantly surprised that we would be recording in the middle of Sara's awesome living room (yup a real living room) with a giant couch, a cool retro green carpet, a comfy loungechair and chairs lined up in a semicircle for audience members. Uhuh, there were audience members (some cool comedy kids from Indiana) at this podcast, a real live intern named Adam and a sound guy named Andrew. AMAZING. These ladies have more of a production set up than most comedy and rock clubs in NYC. Check out their awesome NY1 microphones in the pic. Anyway, I loved the show - the banter about their weekly happenings and the looseness of the entire show. Just hanging out and chatting it up. Oh and I can't forget to mention, that my heart was racing just after conversing with Nate at the top of the show. It ended up that Nate also grew up in Nashville, Tennessee as I did, and after rattling off some Nashville connections, we connected the dots to the point that we figured out Nate's dad was one of my favorite camp counselors when I was a kid, Stephen Bargatze who works now as a magician in Nashville. Oh, and the population of the Nashville metro area is 1.5 million people, so our connection was a big freakin' deal. Well it freaked me out, and well You Had to Be There.
Shonali Bhowmiktag:shonalibhowmik.com,2005:Post/938432011-03-15T02:05:00-04:002022-05-20T06:01:45-04:00You asked, "so why a solo release title and no band name?"

Wow, okay I am doing this and it already feels right, with only ten words into it, my first blog entry ever. Random thoughts, random things to share, and a way to check in with myself and keep up with what the heck I am doing. Blah blah blah. Yada yada yada. I am counting down the days to my CD release party which is scheduled for Sunday, March 20th, 2011at Littlefield in Gowanus and that's only 4 full days away. This is the first time I have ever released anything under my own personal name. I've had band names to hide behind, and I love the feeling of being identified with a semi anonymous blob of great people with which we to collectively share both the glory and shame of our artistic creations. ( Tigers & Monkeys is currently recording another release.) So who knows why I stepped out behind the band name. I am trying to figure it out myself. I am thinking that perhaps these stripped down recordings, share a more intimate and personal side of my songwriting. I am hoping that you share a connection to my new recordings which has something to do with the vulnerability of being alone and on your own. We'll see. But that's it, I GUESS! Shonali Bhowmik
